Junior Church Term 2 Letter

Dear Families, Term Two is well under way and we are delighted to welcome everyone, including some new families, to our BCUC Junior Church family. It was thrilling to see Chika Timothy, one of our eight year olds, baptised earlier this month. She is a wonderful witness to us all. A few special events are coming up:- As part of celebrating Pentecost on Sunday 24th May Valerie Aloa and her Junior Church class have created dozens of flames. Children from the Junior Church classes have been invited to write their names on the back of eight flames. These small cards will then be shared among members of the congregation who will pledge to pray for the child whose ‘flame’ they have. It is wonderful to think of our young people covered with prayer. Please talk to Valerie if you have any questions.   Saturday 30th May is Family Fun @ 5 when families gather at the church for activities, craft, fellowship and food. It is a great opportunity to get together, catch up with old friends and meet some new ones. You are assured of a friendly welcome and the opportunity to worship and celebrate as a family   Sunday 14th June is Refugee Sunday and as part of a special service the Junior Church children who meet upstairs have been asked to participate in a drama of the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Some children will be the readers and others, the actors. Children will be rehearsing during church time on 7th June and on 14th June will performing at the Contemporary service and then early on in the Classic service. On the following Sunday they will be invited to perform at the Café Service at 10:30. Children will be encouraged to participate but need not if that is what they prefer. The script is taken from the Good News Bible and will help us all learn that these traditional stories are as relevant now as they were then.   It is always lovely to have parents coming in to see what is happening in the various classes and helping out where needed. Thanks so much. Gaynor Strapp                                17.5.15 … Continue reading

The Next Steps : Advent

The season of Advent is almost here. Our word Advent originates from the Latin word ‘adventus’ meaning coming. Together we are preparing to celebrate the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. As with anything that we do on a regular basis, we need to be reminded about why we do it. In the first century there was a desperate expectation that Jesus would return very soon. The followers of Jesus were persecuted and looked to Jesus coming again to save them. Over the centuries since then there has always been that feeling of expectancy and joyful anticipation as we prepare. Invariably in the busyness of life everything goes back to normal after the boxing-day sales. This Advent season I ask that we look to the coming of our Lord with renewed expectation. Jesus has come into each of our lives and we have been transformed, renewed and will never be the same again. There are three ways to consider advent; Jesus came into the world 2000 years ago as a baby, Jesus came into my life when I accepted him as my Lord & Saviour and Jesus is coming into the world again. The next steps for BCUC are to celebrate the historic advent, encourage others to be transformed by the personal advent and to serve in the mission of God in the anticipation of the future advent when Christ will come again. … Continue reading

The Next Steps

“It is not the church of God which has a mission in the world; it is the God of mission who has a church in the world.” (Rowan Williams) Tuesday night with the first ever Expanded Church Council we took an important step towards progressing God’s plans for his work in our world – both in our BCUC community and in the community in which we are engaged. The Expanded Mission Action Council allows us to all be in one place together so we are able to communicate with each other, ask our questions and develop our plans to as we prepare to do what God has called us to do. Three of our Mission Action Areas actively engaged in information sharing and discussion around 3 proposals that had recently been submitted to Church Council and needed wider consultation. One MAA was able to concentrate on the Mission plans for their area and to help us refine that planning process. ‘Thank you’ to all those who attended, who stepped out in Faith with us as we tried something new; a process we hope will save us time and allow everyone affected by a proposal to speak into it and to be heard. For these Expanded Church Council meetings to be valuable, valued and effective it is your participation on whatever level you are able to that is helpful. The next Expanded Church Council meeting will be Tuesday March 3rd 2015. Members of each MAA will share their ongoing plans for 2015 and the consultation around implementing the Mission Action goals for each MAA will begin. We are here together for a purpose, for God’s purpose and together we reap the benefits of belonging to a very special caring community. So as with last Tuesday we promise good food, vibrant worship and meaningful communication. Valerie Aloa … Continue reading
